Haywood Spay/Neuter envisions a future where proper health care is available to every pet in Haywood County, regardless of owner income status. Spay and Neuter services are essential to the health of each dog or cat and greatly diminish the cycle of homeless and unwanted animals. Our wellness programs provide education, referral resources, and essential services to empower pet owners to give their companions the healthy, happy lives they deserve.
TRANSPORT UPDATE: Asheville's ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance is temporarily closed. We cannot post our November dates until they are again up and running. Our office is open sporadically due to limited staffing and accepting only cash for flea and tick medications. Please be patient during these trying times.

For those with October dates, we will be reaching out with updates early next week.
VOLUNTEER
“We need individuals who sincerely want to make a difference in the lives of Haywood County animals. Your timing will never be better than if you come forward now. We are at a crossroads to achieve the goal that animal advocates envisioned for years: no more homeless pets.” - Nancye Buelow, Board President
Here are a few examples of how volunteers help us reach our goals:

Bi-weekly spay/neuter transports
Greet four-legged clients and their owners from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM every other Wednesday when pets are dropped off at our office, the transport collection site. Duties include going over paper work with our clients and assisting them getting their pets into crates. We also need a little muscle in the morning to help load the transport truck. Not a morning person? Then meet the clinic transport truck for pet returns every other Thursday from noon to 1:30 PM to answer questions and help owners understand post-surgery instructions for their pet. It's always fun to re-unite our clients with their pets, difficult to tell who is more excited.

Crate Cleaning
Not a glamorous job, but a very important part of our spay/neuter service! Many of our clients do not own crates for their dog or cat, so we provide them for a small $5 use fee. We sanitize all crates on site after each transport and then stack them for re-use. Wear old clothes, rubber gloves, protective eye wear, and galoshes for a satisfying workout.

Board Membership
Do you have a special skill that will help move current projects forward -- or launch one waiting for attention? Can you expand our audience and improve our ability to provide spay/neuter services to low- income households? Then SAY YES! Current board members are animal lovers with a variety of backgrounds and skills. Like you, we want to improve the welfare of pets and eliminate shelter euthanasia of healthy animals. But we are stretched thin. We need to increase our numbers to increase our effectiveness. We need YOU. Say YES!

Special events, festivals and fundraising
Only a few hours to spare? If you love the hustle bustle of local festivals, then we invite you to promote our mission and greet our booth visitors during special events and fundraisers. We always appreciate assistance with venue set-up / take down. Want more hands on with pets? Share your talents with a smile as you assist clients during our periodic microchip and wellness clinics.

Crafting
If you enjoy making handcrafted products, consider donating your pet-oriented crafts to sell at a local festival for the benefit of Haywood Spay/Neuter. Handcrafted items are a hit with the public, opening a door to spread the word about our mission while raising money for our projects.

Office duties
Does a desk chair fit you better? Devote two to three hours a week to keep the whole spay/neuter process going. Office volunteers help answer the phone, tell the public about our low-cost programs and clinics, help process clients, file, re-organize, tidy up, and stuff envelopes for mailings. Think outside the box and keep flyers stocked at key locations to promote our services to low-income clients.

Communications
Calling all talented writers, computer savvy individuals, and those with a flair for marketing! Put your creative talents to work for the benefit of low-income dogs and cats, saving lives with lower shelter intakes and fewer unwanted litters. Contribute to our newsletters or promote a favorite project. There are stories to tell and many more pet owners to reach!

Grant writing
If you have a background in this area and a passion for helping animals, then we would love to have you assist us in applying for grants. Spay/neuter, microchips, basic wellness support, high-risk breed and community cat issues are core areas that need grantors.
